I kind of assume that there probably was advice around - but Harry
didn't pay any attention. He's older now, and a little bit wiser,
so he is actually looking at his options and thinking about them -
but when he first selected subjects at the end of Second Year, he
didn't really do so.
Chamber of Secrets does describe the process - and basically,
indicates that only Hermione took it very seriously. There's no
specific reference to teachers giving the kids any advice -
although Percy is mentioned as advising Harry, but in the end Harry
doesn't seem to make a particularly informed decision:
"But the only thing Harry felt he was really good at was Quidditch.
In the end, he chose the same new subjects as Ron, feeling that if
he was lousy at them, at least he'd have someone friendly to
help him."
There may well have been pamphlets, etc, about - but Harry doesn't
seem to have taken the process that seriously.
