The bugger factor (sorry, technical term there, as all
musicians/techies will recognise) is that the Hogwarts Express is a
*magical* train.

Just as a for instance, on several occasions people pop forward and
talk to the driver. How do they reach the cab? I'm sure there's a
tender in the way, so there must be some mechanism to allow traffic
*past* it.

Recall how Mr Weasley was able to make the Ford Anglia capacious
enough to fit at least 8 people plus luggage? Not a problem to make
the HE expand to take as many passengers as necessary.

As a side issue, how many times is it that the Trio seem to plonk
themselves down in the last available compartment? Just how likely is
that? Maybe there's a "Room of Requirements" mechanism which makes
more accommodation as and when needed.
