Lupin did indeed teach them to make the boggart funny but, I believe 
that was so they could learn the theory. As in learning the steps 
involved in completing a math problem. But, as in learning math, 
once you're practiced at certain things, you can often skip steps to 
get your answer or desired result. He didnt have to work through the 
riddikulus the way he would not have to work out 5 times 5...at 
least in my head. :-)
