Sirius never had a trial, he was sent directly to Azkaban by Crouch Sr., said 
so in GOF when discussing with Harry about the competition and everything. 
Dumbledore was under the impression that Sirius was the secret keeper, and that 
is why he believed that Sirius was guilty. James and Sirius never told 
Dumbledore about the switch because they knew of the spy in the Order.
