Tom's mother wasn't around for him.  It says in COS in Chap 13:

(Tom speaking to Head Master)
"My mother died just after I was born, sir. They told me at the orphanage
she lived just long enough to name me--Tom after my father, Marvolo after my
grandfather."
--End Quote--

So, unless he was able to get more information about her life and lineage,
which I guess he did, otherwise he wouldn't know what her thoughts were on
pure-blood vs non-pure-blood.
