JKR said (I think it was the WBD chat) that representatives fromt he 
WW go to the muggle parents home to deliver the letter to Hogwarts 
and offer explanations, including why their child has been 
doing "strange" things (like making the glass disappear).  I would 
imagine these same representatives either escort to Diagon Alley or 
give detailed directions.
