Wow...I like the metamorphamagus idea a lot...Perhaps not in this
particular instance, but for a future plot line by JKR.  

IIRC, Tonks said it was somewhat genetic.  We know that Sirius and
Tonks are related (OoP).  We know Sirius' family is full of dark
wizards.  It stands to reason that there would be some DE who have
this same trait...possibly family members...
