The absence of the bubbles, imho, indicates that the gum has been 
tampered with. Someone posted recently that Gran was possibly keeping 
Neville from living up to his full potential by lowering his self 
confidence. It would be very painful for her to lose another family 
member. Could she possibly be the one responsible for keeping Frank 
and Alice from reovering in an attempt to keep them alive?

Another theory that has been brought up is that there is a message in 
all the gum wrappers....
