And if someone from either her mother's side or her father's had been
a wizard then I would think it was *natural* that Lily had magical
abilities. This doesn't fit with Petunia's "Oh, mom and dad were
PROUD - we have a witch in our family!">>>

We are "repeatedly told" a lot of stuff that turns out not to be the
case, whether it be red herrings, mistaken POV, or deliberate lies. I
hear Petunia's complaint more like "*Finally* we manage to produce a
witch! Won't everybody at the next Slytherin Squib family reunion be
absolutely *green*!"
My sense is that JKR shares my feeling that this "bloodline" thing is
a non-issue, and we may see that magic is a perfectly natural human
trait that everyone has to a greater or lesser degree and which
responds to nurture, like the ability to dance or play basketball.
