If I were JKR I would have him alive and trapped behind the veil,
(since he was not actually killed) and in full communication with 
Harry after Harry sends the mirror through the veil as an act of 
final respect to Sirius. Later a possible rescue would develope, but 
it would come to nothing and Harry and Sirius would have to come to 
grips with being apart.
