I saw this. My guess is that V did not kill James at the door. He 
only stunned him. V then went straight to kill Harry, but had to kill 
Lily to get her out of his way. James is still alive when the house 
blows up because of the failed AK. V is vapor, so Peter (who followed 
V to GH) take V's wand and kills James because James knows Peter 
betrayed them.

This proves that V really was only shooting for Harry.
