Ally edited to add:

On the literal interpretation front, you're assuming that the "Lord" 
in Voldemort is the equivalent of a "Lord" in traditional British (or 
other) royalty.  But "Lord" Voldemort is clearly more like a king or 
supreme ruler - that's what he wants to be and the title he chose.
