In PoA, I think it was, Lupin admits the marauders had several close
calls as they wandered around in animal form. They laughed about the
close calls later. Could Bilius have seen Padfoot and mistaken him
for a grim, just as Harry did? The mauraders would never even know
about the resulting consequences or may not even know that Padfoot
was seen that particular time.
