Actually, it's probably just dark humor.  A friend of mine, who was a 
correction officer and EMT, replied once when asked the condition of an inmate who 
had hung up the night before, replied, "Well, his condition is stable.  He's 
still dead."  I read this comment in that same sort of vein (and probably woke my 
neighbors, laughing myself silly...)
