I reply:

I absolutely adore Luna, but I completely agree with you. I loved how they
bonded at the end of OOTP, and I love her quirkly, non-judgmental personality.
However, I see her as being this great platonic friend for Harry in future
books. She's just so open and oddly calm that I could see him telling her
things that he might have trouble telling other people. For example, I would not
be surprised if Luna learned about the Prophecy before Ron and Hermione did;
not because Harry is somehow closer to Luna than Ron and Hermione (I think Ron
and Hermione will always be his closest friends), but because it might be
easier to tell someone like Luna, because being the spacey kind of girl she is, she
probably would not react as strongly to the news as Ron and Hermione would
and because their strong reactions would probably be quite upsetting for him to
see.

As for that JKR quote, I could have sworn that I read someplace that she said
that Harry would eventually be paired up with someone who was mentioned in
the *first book.* (Though I can't seem to find where I read it). But that
would eliminate Luna as well.

I reply:

Yeah, when it comes right down to it, my dislike for Ginny is the reason I am
not in favor of the H/G ship. I suppose I don't have massively good reasons
for disliking her, but in general, from Books 1-4, I found her to be this very
weepy, fairly weak individual who seemed to be constantly in need of
someone's protection, when other people like Ron and Hermione, who were of similar
age, just seemed a lot tougher. It's probably very unfair of me, but anytime I
thought of her character, I thought of her crying. I definitely didn't think
she was strong enough for Harry. I also didn't care for the "Famous Harry
Potter" implications of her crush.

I also agree with you about her OOTP development as being unconvincing. I
usually accept anything JKR puts out hook, line and sinker. But one line in COS
about Ginny talking a lot when Harry is not around, does not provide
sufficient foundation for the sudden appearance of this hex-throwing, great
Quidditch-playing, boyfriend-changing, sharp-tongued girl. Though I completely agree, I
think the books are probably heading in a H/G direction.
