Geoff:
It has been suggested in the past that this is another of JKR's puns 
on names along the lines of Diagon Alley and Knockturn Alley. 
Grimmauld= grim old. Auld is a Scots dialect word for old. Edinburgh 
has the nickname of "Auld Reekie" and JKR has Edinburgh connections.
