It looks like a fairly standard awards shield which you will find in 
many UK schools. They would be for a specific sport or house - this 
one looks as if it may be for Gryffindor Quidditch and would have 
separate small shields attached around the edge indicating who won it 
or to whom it was awarded in a particular year. Presumably this one 
may be for Quidditch captains and particularly gifted players (I 
can't recall whether JP was captain or not....)
