It may just be that he has been there teaching the same things so 
long that he can't remember what year it is.  In any case, he 
probably never learns the names of most of his students, since his 
lessons consist of nothing but lecture.

I wonder if "Perkins" in that quote is the same Perkins who works 
with Arthur Weasley at the Ministry.  It's interesting how things 
like that creep into the story.
