Actually, he told Dumbledore at the end of CoS; that's when 
Dumbledore made his famous, "It's our choices rather than our 
abilities that define who we are" speech and showed him that the 
sword said Godric Gryffindor.  Apart from Dumbledore, however, I 
don't think anyone else knew.  (Unless that was one of his memories 
Snape saw during the Occulmency lessons?... I don't have my copy of 
OotP handy so I can't say for sure.)
