If I remember correctly, the  younger set assumes it is a weapon but that is purely their naive assumption.    Whenever they confront any of the Order about it, they are given an indirect "ask no questions" answer.     It very well could have been the prophecy and since that was indeed what Voldemort was after, it would make sense that that was what was being guarded.
