Viridis (me):
There is another mention in CoS about interaction of ghosts with material world: after Nearly Headless Nick was petrified he was "ventilated" with large fan into the Hospital Wing (by Justin, as I remember). 
So to some extent ghost can influence matery in JKR books (and be influenced, like flushing down).
