Of course they are, as they are related with myriads of other fantasy and non-fantasy books, mythological stories and folktales. The great work of segregating basic themes of a thousands folk-tales was done by Vladimir Propp in 1928. For those who are to lazy to rea the Russian orignal (shame on you) or even the English translation of his "Morphology of the Folktale" (more shame on you) I present the links below:

You can trace HP story through it quite easily - just remember the Propp's stages does not necessarily follow in very ordered manner, different combinations are allowed.
