Hullo, newbie here...I've been lurking for a while and I had thought
of bringing this up myself, but I'm glad someone else did first. :)

The specific HP parallel with LotR which caught my attention was the
Wormtail situation: Harry regrets letting him get away, and
Dumbledore tells him that he may one day be glad that he did, because
Wormtail now owes Harry a life debt which could have some important
part to play later on. Similarly (---LotR spoilers follow,---)
Gandalf told Frodo not to be too hasty in wishing that Bilbo had
killed Gollum when he had the chance, because not even the wise could
see all ends; he felt Gollum still had some part to play--Bilbo's
pity could rule the fate of many.

In LotR, Frodo fails--he's overcome with lust for the Ring at the
last possible moment, and only Gollum's attack brings about its
destruction. If the parallel continues to its logical conclusion, we
may find Wormtail inadvertantly making it possible for Harry to
defeat Voldemort.

Then again, JKR may decide to turn the whole thing upside down and
shock us Tolkienophiles with an entirely different play on the
idea. ;)

Having lots of fun watching y'all spin theories here... :)
