So, he must have been working on his own without DD's knowldege (a
lot like Harry, isn't he?) If he went to Poppy, DD would find out.
(Does Snape really think he can keep this sort of thing from DD?)
But why then did he choose the teachers' lounge? Wouldn't his own
office be a better place?

Maybe not if he were a spy acting as a DE...Since Snape doesn't seem to 'live' anywhere else, anything he might have his hands on for the DE's probably has to be kept in his private chambers and/or office. Depedning on what side Filch (And Snape) might be on, there could be things in either room that he would not want filch to see or get into (Not to mention the ever-voracious readers who would dissect avery object in said rooms for clues as to 'Whose side Snape is on'.
Of course, perhaps more practically, perhaps it was easier, closer and faster for Snape to go to Filch instead of the other way around...maybe all those dungeons steps were a bit much to brave with a fresh cerebus wound on his leg...(Not to mention, Harry would have never heard or seen that scene if Snape HAD secured himself in his chambers first...^^)
