Hi vmonte,
this is indeed a very interesting question. From my point of view he
is a serpent, but he musn´t be an animagus. I highly doubt he is
Voldi´s pet. Nagini the snake is, well, a girl (hehe). Wouldn´t
it be
a horrific idea if poor Snapey would turn out a hermaphrodite?
In an other forum I wrote a longer essay why I think he is a snake or
better like a snake. He reminds me of a snake. I never bought the
vampire story. He is Severus Snape, head of Slytherin House, which
symbol is a SERPENT.
Even I´m a sceptical with all these anagram talks, his name can be
changed indeed into very snaky anagrams.
The first one is SUAVE SERPENS, which means in Latin "kiss of the
snake (urrghh sounds good, doesn´t it?)and "soft/gentle snake".
The second one would be SEAVU SERPENS, which means "rage (angry, hard
severe!!!) and wild snake". It´s maybe no proper Latin but JKR
herself
uses "wrong Latin" sometimes.
Both anagrams fit perfectly his personality.
A third anagram for his name is "SAVE PURENESS". Sounds very
Slytherin-like, doesn´t it?
By the way, I think he is a snake charmer. Before the fith book was
released I got the idea he maybe is a Parselmouth, too. I´m not
certain anymore, he is an superb Occlumens and maybe this is the true
reason why he let Draco made the Serpensortia charme. It´s quite
possible he already had an idea of that Harry is a Parselmouth. Still
it is possible he is a Parselmouth himself, or understands snakes? Who
knows? Tom Marvolo Riddle told Harry Potter in the Chamber of Secrets
that they both PROBABLY are the only two people who still can talk to
snakes. He wasn´t sure about it.
