Alice:

And at least as important, if it fits into JKR's concept of alchemy: 
the quest for the ability to turn base metals to gold is supposed 
to have reflected a more important, internal process.  I.e., if an 
alchemist attained a certain state of soul, he was supposed to 
be able to create the Philosopher's Stone.

For Snape's sake, I hope that Potions doesn't require a similar 
process.
