So - until Harry tells him that Lily died to protect
him, Dumbledore 
had no idea how Harry survived. He couldn't have known
either - since 
he was not at Godrics Hollow that night.
What made me wonder is how quickly Dumbledore is to
give Harry the 
answer about the 'Love Protection' Lily gave him.

I think DD knew Lily died to save HP.  But it is
repeatedly worded in all of the books, and from Harry
himself, that they don't know HOW he survived, even
though he knows his mother died to save him.  They
know there was ancient magic because of his mother. 
But, they don't know how it works nor why LV didn't
die completely.  
They don't know HOW the ancient magic works, to a
certain extent.  As stated in book 4, HP is the ONLY
survivor of the AK curse.  So, while they all have
clues about Lily saving HP, they don't know HOW or WHY
it worked fully.

I think DD didn't know the full details until HP told
him.  But, I DO think he had some idea.
