To fit it for your length of the arme, grasp of your hand - comfort of usage, mainly.

If you can hack of hipogriff head with such Muggle weapon as the axe, you can hack off the wizard's one >;) And silver bullets re being shot at werewolves from something, arent't they?
They don't use sidearms, because they are all legally armed - wand serves as a multipurpose gun. As for the heavier weapons - they can be possible easy to sabotage, so not very useful. Imagine a stick of boms banished back to the plane :)
I think Wizards did notice the Wars and that;s the very reason they are so secretive. The Sttus of serecy went into use exacty in the moment when Muggles started to organize very large armies, standarized and using high firepower. The Muggle technology was no longer possible to balance (or at least Wizard lost easy upper hand), so the Wizard wnt into hiding.
Yes, gunning down Thingy would be quite funny. And anticlimactical. Raiders of the Lost Ark?
Cheers, Viridis
P.S. Or maybe Harry will just bash his head open with a stone (club)? Levitated one? Sounds familiar?
