Witch Writer:

I am all with potioncat on this. There is no way DD would have
known that the Chamber was opened by Tom Riddle and the monsterous
creature dwelling inside was a Basilisk. He didnt have so many clues
to work with. Only one incident happened and that was the death of
Myrtle. He does not know parsel tounge and thus couldnt have know
that a snake is moving in the wall(through pipes). He couldnt have
figured out people are petrified if not seen in the eye. I am sure he
had one clue though, that spiders flee from it. But is that enough.
And sure enough DD would have known Hagrid didnt do that murder.

DD sure would have quizzed the ghost, but what can he find out?
That she was killed by big yellow eyes and a boy was whispering some
thing weird. It could have been any language she didnt understand.
And as DD couldnt have figured out its a snake and moves through
plumbing, couldnt have understood or rather concluded that seeing the
yellow eyes near the sink had anything to do with the entrance being
located.
