Carol:
Passing false information would be both stupid and fatal. I'm pretty
sure that he and Dumbledore decide just which information and how much
should be passed on to his contacts. I think he primarily exchanges
information with Malfoy during Christmas break and the summer holiday.
He clearly had recently talked to Malfoy when he informs Sirius in OoP
(not without a little sadistic pleasure in the effect of his words)
that Malfoy had seen Sirius in dog form on Platform 9 3/4. Snape could
tell Malfoy that Karkaroff had fled after the Tri-Wizard Tournament,
for example, or partial truths that Malfoy could act on prematurely
(as LV did with the partially overheard prophecy). It's a dangerous
game, but Snape is cunning and knows Malfoy well. He can also conceal
his own emotions when he chooses--and extract information from Malfoy
on the pretext of keeping up with developments. At any rate, I'm
certain that he reports the entire conversation to Dumbledore--or even
extracts the memory from his mind so they can watch it together in the
Pensieve.
