Unfortunately, it's fairly evident that Lupin did NOT achieve his intent, if
it was to shore up Neville's backbone when dealing with Snape. If anything,
Neville's behavior and reactions in Snape's class are worse in the following
books, even while his confidence in DADA improves.
As for Lupin not being able to find a job, methinks that has more to do with
Umbridge than with Snape. Was it not she who pushed through the law making it
almost impossible for werewolves to find work? Obviously, this happened
sometime AFTER PoA, since it obviously wasn't illegal for Dumbledore to hire him -
just a highly questionable act, in the view of some.
Sure, Snape outed him to the Slytherins - but he didn't exactly take out an
ad in the Prophet, now, did he?
