I do think someone else was there.    I have this sneaky suspicion that it was
a certain Potions teacher, perhaps in the form of a bat.    I don't think Voldemort was aware that another party was there.    I think they were small enough to be unseen.    Would make it ideal for a bat to be there, hidden.    Now, why Snape would have been at the Potters is anyone's supposition.    If there was an indication that Voldemort was headed to the Potters' perhaps Snape went to warn them.
