I know that a lot of people enjoy, along with myself, interviews from Jkr. I
recently bought a magazine, which is a collectors edition of Movie Magic.
There are a few quotes that (to me) answer a few of the questions that have
come up in the posts. I am just copying a few excerpts from the article.
Jkr:
Harry, she continued, is someone forced to make his own choices in life.
He has very limited access to truly caring adults and he is guided by
conscience. He makes mistakes, repeatedly, but, like I said, he is
ultimately guided by his conscience. He is also flanked by two friends. They
work far better as a team than apart, though Harry tends to be the one who
has to shoulder most of the burden. He is the true hero in that sense. Then
theres Hermione, who is really the brain of the outfit, and Ron, who is
also a very brave character.
Weve had a glut of very realistic, gritty, very bleak books, says
Rowling. Some of them are brilliantly written, and I think it would be a
tragedy if they werent being written. Having said that, though, I dont
think Harry is an entirely frivolous book. There are difficult things that
we see Harry go through, but its not an issue book in the sense that you
would sit down after reading it and think about what this books deals with,
what it attempts to explain. You see Harry coming to terms with things in
his life, and I hope that all of that is integral to the story. But its not
meant to be the main thrust of the story.
What I had found interesting was that twice in the first paragraph she
repeats that Harry is guided by his conscience. Isnt that the little voice
inside your head, so to speak?
The second paragraph (really the last two lines) was really something to
think about. Just thought Id ask you fellow posters what you thought.
I am very curious as to what the main thrust of the story is if its not
about Harry.
