Notice the use of the conditional tense... "may" - and it doesn't
include rabbits or tarantulas (Lee is out of order!)>
I rather belive that these are listed as ideas for new students. They seem to be
rather common animal types for the young witches and wizards to have and that's
probably why they're listed. You could probably bring any animal from home so long
as it's not a danger to other students.
These are also animals most commonly found around witches/Wizards through out
literature and perhaps JKR couldn't think of anything else while she was writing out
that bit but later thought of Scabbers and Lee's tarantula, but never bothered to
change it to include other animals.
