Stupid things characters do to the sake of the plot

Yes, this was stupid but:
1) It's totally in character for Lockhart to brag.
2) He's confident enough in his Memory Charms to not be concerned 
how much he blabs.
3) This type of exposition is common in the series near the end of 
the books, from various characters.

Undoubtedly he did. McGonagall and Snape certainly did. Dumbledore 
puts up with a lot of teachers with flaws (Snape, Hagrid, and 
Trelawney, to name just a few) because he seems to think that 
EVERYBODY, despite their flaws, has something to offer. It's a nice 
lesson, actually. DD always seems to take an "it's all for the best" 
attitude about everything. I envy his calm.
