preventive effect was intended. Hermione is a very intelligent 
person, but she's hard-headed and maybe a bit "socially retarded", as 
it were.

Genius doesn't equal perfection. Even geniuses make mistakes.

Then too, bear in mind that plain, "swotty" Hermione was written as 
JKR's avatar. I think the technical American-English term for that 
sort of intelligence is "smarty-pants".
