I read that incident as more symptomatic of the young Sevvy really _not_
being lucky with the girls. It's (perhaps) one of his first shots at riding
a broomstick and there's some lass making fun of him.

Add to that the fact that the only girl in his group of friends was Bella
(who seems to have been the sort of person who treats _everyone_ like
something she just found stuck to the sole of her shoe), then it adds to the
picture of him as being quite a shy little soul in that respect.
