I've always assumed that they could use a small flame (candle, 
lantern) sort of like a phone, but now that I think of it, it's never 
been done that way in canon.

There is a more efficient means of communication, but we haven't been 
shown it.

Personally, I'd like for my teens to have to kneel at the fireplace 
to talk to their friends....they wouldn't be hogging it so much, I 
dare say!
