Thanks, Del, for a fascinating post.  I've always felt uneasy about 
Arthur's reaction to Percy's promotion.  It is NOT a kind thing to 
suggest to your son, when he comes to you glowing with pride at 
having secured such a good job, that he has only obtained it because 
he can be manipulated.
There does seem to be a tendency among wizard parents/grandparents, 
especially the pure-bloods -  to put down their offspring - think 
Draco/Lucius, Neville/Gran, Sirius/Mrs. Black.  I am surprised at 
Arthur, though.

Sylvia (who can remember some really monumental family rows, which 
eventually got themselves sorted).
