I can't argue with your statement that many of the kids dislike Snape
(Slytherins aside). However, whether they like potions or not, it
appears that they are learning. In OOTP it is stated that Snape's
students have a very high pass rate on their OWL's (sorry, don't have
my book at work so can't cite the chapter/page). It seems to me that
like him or not, his students know the subject.
