Sorry, my copy of Chamber of Secrets (Scholastic, first edition,
46th printing) clearly states "ancestor". A difference in
your edition would make clear the discrepancy here but I don't
think either word would change the gist of the discussion.

Why does DD know what he knows?
Have no idea.
Does DD know everything?
Not likely.

But after reading the five books repeatedly I would wager it is
because he is a very old and learned scholar of all things
wizarding and of the great mysteries of life in general. Without
the stories becoming some huge massive tome that explains
everything about everybody I have to take some things on faith
that are consistent with a characters behavior and experience.
No doubt there is some chance for truth in the speculations you
have brought forth but there has yet to be anything in the books to
support them.

I wish I had time for a proper and longer reply but I must away to
work. I would much rather sit here to sip coffee and talk Harry &
friends.

Hawk
