I have posted something similar to this before, but one hypothesis 
about the prophecy, particularly the "one cannot live while the 
other survives" may actually be referring to persona versus person.  

Persona: Voldemort, The Boy Who Lived
Person: Tom Riddle, Harry Potter

If they remain in their personas, the persons cannot survive.  If, 
however, they live in their person, the personas must go.  This adds 
the idea of redemption of Tom Riddle the person, while Lord 
Voldemort can be vanquished.
