I don't think this is too farfetched.  We've seen examples of 
bewitched items falling into Muggle hands, of houses going back to 
Muggles, and of witches falling in love with Muggles.  There must be 
some contact between the two worlds.  In one of JKR's interviews she 
says something about children going to Muggle schools.  I couldn't 
see how magic children could have attended Muggle schools, but 
perhaps that is what she meant. (I assumed Muggleborn wizards and 
witches went to Muggle schools.)

But it always seemed strange, the wording, "They were so proud to 
have a witch in the family."
