I presume you mean why did they call Sirius Snuffles? I have always
assumed it's because, in his Animagus form, he is a dog.

And to further explain--'snuffling' is how dogs using their scenting ability
is often described...

"The dog snuffled through the trash" or "The dog snuffled the boys ear in a
friendly manner..."
