Certainly suffering such as in the death camps was terrible, horrific 
and unimaginable.  However, the tenets of Judaism will say that life is 
precious, each moment is incredibly valuable and even suffering can be 
transformed for the good.

As a Jew I can say it's better to be alive in order to have the 
possibility of finding joy and service to others.  So I'd say dying is 
always the lesser choice.
