Geoff:
Remember that Gryffindor is a form of the French "Griffon d'or" 
(golden griffin).

Interestingly, I live nowadays in the county of Somerset in the West 
of England. The coat of arms of the county is a white Griffin on a 
dark red background - not far removed from that of Gryffindor.
