JKR's new and totally fabulous website is up 
(http://www.jkrowling.com) and the following theories have been 
rendered null and void:

Ginny is short for Virginia/nothing-just-Ginny. It's Ginevra, and 
she's the first female Weasley in several generations.

Harry is related to Dumbledore. ("You really have been watching too 
much Star Wars...")

Harry is descended from Salazar Slytherin. He's not, and my heart is 
cleft in twain.

Molly is related to the Malfoys. Her maiden name is Prewett (yeah, 
*those* Prewetts.)

The good news is that Dean Thomas has a lovely long backstory that 
was edited out in favor of Neville's story, since he has more to do 
with the plot, but may turn up later on.
