There is possibly a different take on this. I remember a story once 
where the hero was faced with a situation in which two of his 
colleagues were threatened and he could only save one of them.

Supposing that were to happen. Harry would not be making an 
apparently cold decision to "write off" one of his friends but would 
have to make the agonising decision of whom to save. Of course, it 
could also arise at such speed that he acts instinctively without 
having time to weigh the consequences of his choice.

Just my idea....
