I know it's been pointed out that "Mrs. Norris" is the name of a
particularly nasty character in Jane Austen's 'Mansfield Park.'
Well, I'm re-reading 'Mansfield Park' right now, and came across
this little passage:
'How long ago is it, aunt, since we used to repeat the chronological
order of the kings of England, with the dates of their accession,
and most of the principal events of their reigns!'
'Yes,' added the other; 'and of the Roman emperors as low as
Severus...'
I'll bet Rowling first came across the name in this way, maybe
before she even began to write the text. It might have just stuck
in her mind as a very appropriate name for a real SOB, and Snape
developed accordingly.
