Technically they are children's books but there are books that are about 
children (rather than strictly *for* children)that seem to inhabit a no 
man's land in publishing.  C.S. Lewis, an Inkling, held the same 
territory.  It's often said JKR is the next generation Inkling.

What makes the Potter books work--why we're all here--is that they are 
layered enough so that each age group can extract meaning at their own 
level.  You're not reading into the books, you are reading the books.
